Life becomes pants all round as Space01 adopts Smalls for All as its official charity

Space01 today proudly claimed it had launched the ‘most pants website ever’. It would be hard to disagree as the charity Smalls for All, on whose behalf the site was launched, has to date collected over 25,000 pairs of knickers and distributed them to women and children in poor countries in sub-Saharan Africa.

Certainly many commentators and industry chiefs are suggesting that more IFAs will ‘restrict’ than had been previously thought. At the sharp end of the market this concurs directly with what Space01’s own panel of IFAs has been telling us in our regular research sessions.

Working in financial services takes you into some interesting and different places and it’s always good when we find we can deploy our skill sets in slightly left field areas. So we’re delighted to announce that we’ve recently created a new online conveyancing tool and wrapped it up in a new business called Jet Convey. We’re rather excited about Jet, (and rather proud of our new baby) so thought we’d tell you about it and also put together a media cuttings file for anyone who may be interested (see end of post).

Listen carefully – is that the rustle of protection providers gearing up for auto-enrolment? If they’re not they should at least be thinking about it because if you thought auto-enrolment was just about pensions it’s time to think again. The fact is it’s the chance to write protection business on an exponential scale for next to no effort – it’s time for a group hug.

In the land of the soon-to-retire, the man with the crystal ball is King.

Hard on the heels of our blog last week on the ravages of inflation on retirement income comes news today that a stonking 14,000,000 people have pensions far worse than their parents and will be obliged to downgrade their standard of living the day they retire. It’s in the Daily Telegraph so it must be right.

Is the importance of the effect of inflation realised in retirement planning?

The last inflation figures brought some relief to British consumers amid the misery, but this has not been a great few years in terms of the real erosion in the value of their assets. We know that figures get bandied about for how much people will need to retire on comfortably. But do they realise the importance of inflation to their retirement planning and retirement goals?

When half the world is asking how to beat inflation with savings and investments then surely financial services firms should be coming up with the answer. Or at least offering to.

That doesn’t mean immediately turning to the product suite and asking what do we have on the shelf that might do the job. But it may mean trying to understand what the public needs to know, helping them with answers and then perhaps offering something – advice, a fund, a service or even a strategy that can help.

Personal experience often lets you find the weakness in a product. My own personal experience was in believing I had mobile phone insurance with a packaged bank account. Until of course I lost my (quite expensive) phone, and only then realised that when I took out the account I should have logged on and provided further details to activate it. The result – no cover!

The boss of global advertising firm WPP, Martin Sorrell, may be right on the money when he describes Google as a frenemy

A frenemy is, of course, a friend who is also a rival, a term often applied to rival, outwardly-friendly, Hollywood stars. It certainly works in this case. Google is a hugely important ally and an almost equally massive threat to the advertising industry.

Sometimes one of the most important things you can do in business is learn from the mistakes of others. It may seem an odd thing to apply to pensions or investments, but at the moment, one website that is going through quite a bit of self inflicted pain is Guardian Soulmates.

Hi Ho Silver Lining - is equity release the last dance saloon for retirement?

Back in the day, when we all felt bomb-proof on a Saturday night at the village hall dance, many a happy evening ended with a rousing chorus of Hi Ho Silver Lining. Young, free, and years before your face book page told the world whether or not you were single, with property prices rising faster than today’s price of diesel, the most likely certainty was that we’d all live happily ever after.
